Why I Love Beauty and the Beast

I grew up with all those classic Disney movies. I have seen mostly every single animated Disney film (with one or two exceptions). My favorites were Sleeping Beauty and The Sword in the Stone. That is, until the golden age of Disney fell upon the land. At this time, Disney released The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mulan. Of course those last few couldn't match the critical acclaim of the first four, but they were good in their own right (Hunchback is one of those exceptions I mentioned earlier).

Of the big four, I have to say that Beauty and the Beast is the best of them. Don't get me wrong, all of those movies are classics, but Beauty and the Beast had it all. I don't think there is a single song in that movie that isn't a great song or weaker than any of the others. I think what makes the songs so great is they are catchy which appeals to children, but when you hear them again as an adult you realize there is so much more...

Take for instance the opening song:

Growing up I had no clue what the word provincial was. This song meant nothing to me other than that they said "Bonjour!" a lot and the song was catchy. Now I know that Belle sings of how all she's ever known is some small town in France and how she fantasizes of an exciting life because of the books she reads.

Let's not forget about everyone's favorite and arguably the best song in the movie, "Be Our Guest."

Once again, this song is catchy and fun when you are a kid, but as an adult you have a deeper appreciation for the lyrics of the song. Of course even as a grown up, the song is still super catchy and fun to sing. It could be a perfect song for a road trip. (At first everyone will be like "Huh?" but give it a few seconds and everyone will be singing like goons.)

Of course the story is a great retelling of a classic fairy tale, but who cares. Candlesticks and clocks talk and sing while a grumpy beast falls in love with a beauty. It's perfect and is my number 3 favorite movie.

Hi Ant -

Beauty and the Beast is and has always been my favorite fairytale. I have a small collection of stories that have Beauty and the Beast themes. I also have a few different videos. I used to have the classic French film version by Jean Cocteau, called La Belle et la BĂȘte, but somehow it disappeared. I think I'll have to re-purchase it on Amazon.
When all of you were little, I used to buy all the Disney movies. Uncle Johnny would ask why I was buying them since Chris was already grown up. I would say it was so when all of you came to visit you could watch them - LOL! Truth was, yes I'd play them for you whenever any of you came to visit, but they were really for me. And I still watch them to this day. Disney movies are classics!

Love you - Titi Elaine
