It never dawned on me that this would result in interesting and artistic photographs. I don't know enough about the process, but I wonder if older cameras were able to take pictures like this. I know modern digital cameras can take these pictures because the CCD (the device that collects the photons for pictures) can detect infrared sources. As a test, aim your TV remote (which uses an infrared LED) at your phone's digital camera. You should be able to see a light, but if you look at it normally you won't.
