I'm Being Sued by Sesame Street?!

Remember this tall tale I told a couple years ago about Stef? I claimed to tell the true story of a certain Woolly Mammoth in relation to my girlfriend and now it has come back to haunt me. In a very bizarre circumstance, the people behind the long running TV show and their lawyers are suing me for various purposes. I received an email last night stating their case that if I did not remove the post they would sue. I thought it was a prankster so I just deleted it. This morning some guy showed up at my front door and served me a subpoena with the exact claims for the case.

Some of the reasons for the suit:
  • Trademark infringment - for using the aformentioned name of the fictional Mammoth
  • Defamation of character - can you defame a fictional being?
  • Breach of Ownership - because I didn't properly display Sesame Street as the rightful owners of characters and trademarks
  • Nondisclosure - because I never revealed that the story was 100% hoax or even 2% hoax
  • Violation of Privacy Policy
  • Violation of Terms of Agreement - for usage of properties, entities, etc

There was a little more, but I'm a little upset to go into all the details right now. The amount that they are suing for is over $350,000. I will have to find a lawyer (or several) to tell me what course of actions I can follow and how I should handle this. I'm hoping a public apology would serve their purposes because I do not have the kind of money to pay for litigation and the penalty should I lose the case. I'm meeting with a local attorney tomorrow morning and a representative from Sesame Street Workshop (the people behind the show) on Friday to discuss alternatives. I think it will get worked out because I don't think it would look good for them to pick on a no-name blogger.

I just can't believe this is happening to me. I'll prepare a "statement" in a little while once I collect my thoughts. I never meant to hurt anyone, and especially not children who may come across that post via search engines. I love Sesame Street and have loved the show since I was a very young child. I have many memories with the characters and I hope this will all work out in the end.
